abstract = "The knowledge of the forest stock is important for forest
resources planning. The combination of the forest inventory with
geostatistics and remote sensing provide to more accurate
estimates of forest biomass. Therefore, the present study aimed to
compare volume estimates from the ordinary kriging and co-kriging.
It was used the NDVI as the auxiliary variable for co-kriging. The
work was performed in a fragment of Cerrado Sensu Stricto located
in the north Minas Gerais State. The results shown by the
statistics of the residual standard error (Syx), residual average
and graphs of observed and predicted values and percentage errors
relative to observed values did not show significant differences
between ordinary kriging and co-kriging. Also, it was observed
that the maps generated by kriging and co-kriging are very
similar. These results demonstrate that the use of an auxiliary
variable with low correlation in relation of the primary variable
(r=0,346), as well as the poor spatial dependence of the auxiliary
variable did not aggregate for a more accurate information. The
performing of the co-kriging is not suitable in the situation that
the auxiliary variable presents a low correlation with the main
variable and also when the auxiliary variable presents a poor
                         spatial dependence.",
